To provide the highest quality prevention for suicide, violence, and substance abuse by training, supporting and empowering both peer leaders and caring adults to impact their friendship networks and by using rigorous testing to maximize health and protection in the real world.
We are a student-centered program that empowers youth to improve their school climate by building, activating, and mobilizing Sources of Strength in ways that positively change individuals and communities.
Sources of Strength is a student leadership program aimed at improving school climate, developing help-seeking behaviors from youth to adults, and breaking codes of silence. Sources of Strength focuses on eight strengths to promote resiliency in youth, they are: family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality, medical access, and mental health.
Sources of Strength in Juneau, Alaska is a subsidiary of SOST National. Since it began in 2013, Sources of Strength has supported teams in four schools in Juneau (TMHS, JDHS, YDHS, and DHMS). Currently Sources of Strength is active in all three high schools. The JSPC is partnering with Discovery Southeast to develop a Sources of Strength afterschool program to be offered to both middle schools.
Sources of Strength is made possibly by many volunteers and community agencies such as: the Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition, Juneau Youth Services, Juneau Violence Prevention Coalition, AWARE, Community in Schools, NAMI, JSD, Juneau Public Health, and the Youth Ministry Cooperative.
